The Climate Europe Festival, held from March 11-13, 2024, in the enchanting city of Venice, Italy, proved to be a convergence point for diverse stakeholders passionate about advancing climate resilience. Under the theme Bridging science, services and standards for a climate-resilient future, the festival offered a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue, artistic expression, and capacity-building activities.

Event Overview

Distinguished by its fusion of scientific discourse with interactive formats and artistic elements, the festival fostered engagement across different sectors. Plenary sessions, including innovative formats like World Cafés, provided fertile ground for exchanging insights and fostering collaborations. The marketplace buzzed with activity as participants networked and explored projects and initiatives driving climate action.

Key Themes

The festival centered on pivotal themes designed to catalyze dialogue and action:

  • Advancing Climate Services: Discussions delved into the value chain of climate data and its application at local levels. The exploration of Destination Earth’s Digital Twin heralded a new era of interactive engagement with climate information.
  • EU Mission on Climate Change: Emphasizing the role of climate services in supporting the EU Mission on Climate Change Adaptation, sessions highlighted the significance of regional and local efforts in building resilience. Nature-based solutions and the modernization of norms emerged as key strategies. This topic is closely related to the features and models that will be developed within the framework of the UDENE project based on natural-based solutions.
  • Urban Challenges: Discussions emphasized the significance of collaborative engagement between administrations and citizens in designing resilient urban pathways, with a specific focus on sustainable urban development. Municipal administrations, citizens, and innovative tools each contribute significantly to shaping sustainable cities. The UDENE project’s Serbia use case endeavors to facilitate such collaborations and kickstart synergistic actions.

UDENE Project at the Festival

Amidst the festival’s wide variety of discussions and activities, the UDENE (Urban Development Evidence for Decision-Making) project agitated for an innovation in urban planning. Led by presenter Nikola Obrenović, the UDENE project showcased its vision for natural-based solutions and decision-making systems in urban development, leveraging Earth Observation (EO) data from Copernicus satellites and local sources.

Resonance and Reactions

Attendees expressed keen interest in the UDENE project, recognizing its potential to revolutionize urban planning through data-driven insights. The project’s focus on leveraging EO data to support natural-based solutions and decision-making systems resonated strongly with participants, reflecting a growing recognition of the importance of technological innovation in addressing complex urban challenges.

In conclusion, the Climate Europe Festival served as a dynamic platform for cross-pollination of ideas, fostering collaborations, and showcasing innovative solutions like the UDENE project. As we reflect on the festival’s success, we are reminded of the collective commitment to building a climate-resilient future through collaboration, innovation, and evidence-based decision-making.

UDENE PROJECT

The UDENE Project aims to use large amounts of Earth Observation (EO) data from Copernicus satellites and local sources to support evidence-based decision making for urban development, especially in international partner countries. To support the UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 of making cities safe, resilient, and sustainable, the project will essentially create a virtual laboratory for urban planners and visionaries to test their development ideas.
