UDENE’s use cases have been carefully selected to address pressing challenges in urban areas, such as the impact of earthquakes on high-rise buildings, heat islands, air pollution and traffic congestion. The rapid urbanisation of recent decades is set to increase in the coming years as people continue to seek better opportunities and escape the devastating effects of climate change on rural areas and prospects.
It is therefore crucial to ensure that urban development takes into account current and growing challenges to ensure healthy and safe living conditions in cities. As the exploration cases represent a variety of development concepts and outcome variables, they will be used to test and validate the integrity of the data cubes, their representativeness and the completeness of the collected Earth observation data.
By selecting these specific cases, UDENE aims to provide urban planners and decision-makers with the best possible tools to address these challenges and to create a network of good practice examples.
