Representing the UDENE project, the Tunisian Space Association (TUNSA) was at ESRIN, the European Space Agency Headquarters in Italy, at the occasion of the Earth Observation (EO) for Africa Symposium.

Organised by ESA, in partnership with the African Union Commission (AUC), the African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE), the European Commission (EC), the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the symposium is a leading event to build a stronger African-European R&D partnership and facilitate the adoption of EO and related space technologies in Africa.

The overall ambition of the EO for Africa Symposium can be detailed in five key objectives:

  • Showcase the latest R&D EO Science and Applications achievements relevant for the African continent;
  • Further facilitate international EO R&D collaborations across Africa and Europe;
  • Continue the user-driven process of capturing EO high-priority topics for future R&D and capacity development joint efforts;
  • Share information about future EO missions, digital technology, and the related opportunities;
  • Discuss the challenges and opportunities to accelerate the integration of downstream services in operational solutions.

Taking the opportunity of this key event and high-level participants, TUNSA presented an overview of the UDENE project during the session on urbanisation, highlighting its key scientific accomplishments and detailing the anticipated outcomes. The speaker received valuable scientific feedback on the research and activities led within the project, demonstrating once more the importance of inter-regional collaboration.

It is worth mentioning that the EO for Africa Symposium provided an excellent event to engage with African and European institutions involved in the EO sector. It also offered a unique opportunity to explore potential collaborations across Africa and Europe to further promote the UDENE project and its tools.

UDENE PROJECT

The UDENE Project aims to use large amounts of Earth Observation (EO) data from Copernicus satellites and local sources to support evidence-based decision making for urban development, especially in international partner countries. To support the UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 of making cities safe, resilient, and sustainable, the project will essentially create a virtual laboratory for urban planners and visionaries to test their development ideas.
